Excellence in Mississippi Healthcare Since 1969

The medical professionals at Southwest Health System offer experienced and knowledgeable care for patients in Southwest Mississippi and Northern Louisiana communities. While most of our patients would have to drive 60 to 100 miles to receive comparable care in metropolitan areas such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, or Jackson, because of the quality of our nearby services, they are able to receive the best care right here at home. That's what we mean when we say that we go further so you don't have to at Southwest Health System.

Urology: Symptoms, Conditions & Treatments

Urology is defined as the surgical specialty that addresses conditions and diseases affecting the urinary tract, which includes the kidneys, bladder, urethra, and ureters. Urology also encompasses diseases affecting the male reproductive system; i.e., the penis, scrotum, prostate, testes, and so on. Due to the broad scope of conditions and issues encountered in this field, doctors who specialize in urology, or "urologists," must also demonstrate experience and knowledge within a broad range of fields. This includes pediatric medicine, gynecology, and internal medicine.

According to the American Urological Association, there are seven subspecialty areas within the field of urology:

  • Urologic oncology, or urologic cancers
  • Pediatric urology, or children's urology
  • Urinary tract stones, or calculi
  • Female urology, which includes incontinence
  • Neurourology, which includes voiding disorders, impotence, and other issues involving the nervous system's control of the body's genitourinary organs
  • Renal transplant, or kidney transplant
  • Male infertility
