What Is Acute Care?
Acute care involves emergency treatment for patients in need of critical care. Acute care is a secondary healthcare field for patients who are suffering from serious injuries, illnesses, or medical conditions, or who are recovering from major surgery. Acute care is short-term and services at acute care facilities are designed and implemented with the goal of discharging patients once they have rehabilitated to the point of stability. Acute care is also known as secondary care.
Examples of acute care settings include:
- Emergency services
- Cardiac care
- Neonatal intensive care
- Intensive care
- Coronary care
Acute care is the opposite of chronic care, which involves ongoing treatment for long-term illnesses and conditions. While acute care may involve intensive treatment, this pattern of care is usually short in duration. According to the National Outcomes Measurement System (NOMS), the average duration of a patient's acute care stay is 11 days.
The top five primary medical diagnoses for patients receiving acute care, as reported to NOMS:
- Cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs)
- Respiratory diseases
- Head injuries
- Hemorrhage / injury
- Central nervous system (CNS) diseases
