What Does a General Surgeon Do?

General surgery requires comprehensive knowledge of a broad range of conditions, illnesses, and injuries that require surgical attention. This includes knowledge in such fields as anatomy, physiology, wound care, shock treatment, resuscitation, intensive care, neoplasia, immunology, and pathology. Doctors must display experience, skill, clinical understanding knowledge, and technical proficiency.

During residency training in general surgery, medical practitioners must gain experience in surgeries involving:

  • Endocrine system
  • Solid organ transplant
  • Pediatric surgery
  • Surgical critical care
  • Surgical oncology
  • Trauma / burns
  • Emergency surgery
  • Vascular surgery
  • Alimentary tract
  • Epidermis and soft tissue

Surgeons must be able to treat a wide variety of patients, including those facing unique complicating factors such as obesity and terminal illness. For some surgical areas such as bariatric surgery, thoracic surgery, and organ transplantation, additional training may be required. Surgeons obviously play an extremely important role and the rigor of their training and education reflects that reality.

Southwest Health: A Team You Can Trust

Each Mississippi hospital under the umbrella of the Southwest Health is staffed by extremely proficient, knowledgeable, and trained surgeons. Our doctors went to the same schools and display the same levels of skill and experience as those found in larger communities near us such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Jackson, but they have chosen to live and raise their families in McComb and provide a higher level of medical care for the residents of our valued community.
